Dear Doctor, I take oral pills to prevent pregnancy. However, this month I have missed two pills and then on remembering I continued taking the rest. Is there a chance of me conceiving ? -
Ans :If you have missed two pills, please use some other form of contraception along with the pills to prevent pregnancy. You can use condoms for the remaining period of the month till you get your menses. Missing the pills or irregular intake does increase the chances of pregnancy.
I am a 45-year old man. Of late I have started getting severe burning sensation and pain on my feet in the evenings. Is it due to routine tiredness or do I need to see a doctor ?
Ans :You definately neeed to see a doctor. You have to get a routine check-up done for yourself. The burning sensation could be a sign of Vitamin B deficiency or could be a neuropathy due to reasons like diabetes or other ailments. Only a clinical assessment and health check-up by a physician can help resolve the problem at the earliest.
Dear doc, I am 7 months pregnant & have developed fever & cold. My neighbor is diagnosed Swine flu positive. Should I see the doctor? If I am given Tami flu tablets, will it affect my unborn child?
Ans :Yes, you definitely need to see the doctor as you belong to the high risk group for swine flu as pregnancy is a natural immuno suppressed state. If you test positive for H1N1 infection, you will have to take the tablets as the complications of swine flu can be serious. Tami flu is not yet known to cause any ill effect on the unborn.
Hello, my child is 6 weeks old & has been diagnosed with a hole in the heart called as, 'Ventricular Septal Defect'. The doctor said she would not require any surgery & assured us not to worry. Isn't it better to get her operated rather than wait for the worst?
Ans :From the information provided, it seems that your child has a very small hole in her heart which may close on its own as she grows. Also if it does not close on its own, it will pose a major threat. However, regular medical visits to check the progress of the hole and monitoring your child's developments are definitely advised.
Dear doctor, I wish to get liposuction done on my arms. Will I ever gain weight once I get it done?
Ans :Fat cells do not have the capability to regenerate. Hence, once removed by liposuction, they cannot reappear. However, each fat cell has an enormous capacity to expand (almost like an elastic balloon). And hence, if one continues eating a diet high in fats and carbohydrates, the existing fat cells can enlarge in size leading to weight gain and flabbiness. Thus, a healthy diet and an active lifestyle have to be maintained even after liposuction.
Hello doc, I am pregnant and due to deliver in two weeks. However, I have developed varicose veins on both my calves. What do I need to do? – A. K.
Ans :Many women develop varicose veins (enlarged and tortuous veins) in pregnancy due to changes in hormones and the pressure of the large uterus on the abdominal veins. You need to wear compression stockings all day long. They will improve the blood circulation of your legs. You should avoid standing or sitting with your legs dangling for long time. However, walking is a good exercise that will improve the circulation of your blood and avoid it from stagnating in the varicose veins.
Dear doc, I am a 14-year old girl. I get terrible cramps during my menses. The doctor has examined me and said that there is nothing wrong with me. Then why do I get these cramps?
Ans :Women who suffer from cramps during menses seem to produce greater amounts of prostaglandins (hormones secreted by the uterine lining) than other women do. They affect the smooth muscle of the uterus, causing an increase in uterine contractions. The contractions interfere with blood flow, reducing the amount of oxygen reaching the uterus and resulting in severe pain. Painkillers during menses would definitely give some relief. However, if the pain continues to increase in intensity with every menstrual cycle, then you must consult your gynaecologist
Is alcohol in beer / wine better than other liquor?
Ans :No. The type of alcohol in all the drinks is ethanol, only the amount differs. Beer and wine have lesser concentration of alcohol, hence they are considered milder. However if one drinks a lot of quantity of these, the total alcohol content becomes equivalent to other hard liquors. Red wine has some beneficial properties as it has antioxidants which are good for heart health when consumed in moderate quantities only. Of course, there are other sources of these antioxidants like black grapes, green tea, raw tomatoes, berries etc. which will not be addictive unlike alcohol in any form.
Hello Doctor, I have delivered about 4 months ago and have developed terrible stretch marks on my tummy and hips . I visited a cosmetologist and was suggest a laser treatment for stretch marks removal. Does this treatment work?
Ans :There is a controversy on the effectiveness of laser treatment on the removal of stretch marks. Laser treatment may be more effective in removing the recent stretch marks when they are still red or brown as these are easily detected by the laser. Stretch marks older than a year are white and faded and are not easily detected by the laser.
